The project of the course planner of the Venla Relay Jouni Mähönen culminates on Saturday. Mähönen says that in Tampere-Jukola, the best parts of the Kaanaa area have been chosen for women.
- I had three principles guiding me in the planning of the courses: The courses were to be challenging and demanding for the top teams, offer a funny and comfortable orienteering experience for amateur teams, and in addition to provide the spectators with an exciting drama, summarises Mähönen.
Mähönen admits that combining these objectives was challenging but states that the goals were reached. He promises that the best orienteers will win in these courses. He has estimated that the winner team will come out of the forest in three hours and seven minutes.
- Enough mines have been laid in the courses so that also mistakes can be made. Hence, the ideal time may also be exceeded, says Mähönen.
According to Mähönen, the work of the course planner has been rewarding team work where the hours spent have not been calculated.
- During the planning I have thought much of my own experiences in Jukola Relay and especially those hooks that have caught me. In a way, this work done for the Venla Relay reflects a lot my own career. It is also an honour for some course planners, says Mähönen.
