Jukola Relay on an ancient delta Print E-mail
The start of Tampere-Jukola is in the sandy boreal forest, that was formed some 11 000 years ago.

The large and thick icecap was gradually melting during more than 1000 years. Some periods the climate was a bit colder and then again warmer, which meant that the edge of the icecap remained quite stable. This is how the boreal forest was formed. The best known edge formations are Salpausselät.

The edge formation is parallel with the edge of the ice in the ice age and almost perpendicular to the ridges. In the southern parts of Finland and in Lapland the ridges are from southwest to northeast. The ridges are of sand, gravel and rounded stones, but the edge formations can also be of other materials.

The boreal forest is flat because the water melted from the ice has brought sand to the ice lake formed in front of the icecap. The sand was gradually filling the lake, and the competition centre of Jukola and parts of the competition area are located on the same level where the surface of the lake was. Later on the ice lake disappeared.
